Songwriter, composer and playwright David Archibald has created a song, 'River Range Light', in support of the Marine Heritage Society's efforts to restore the iconic Front Range Light at the mouth of the Saugeen River in Southampton.

After being battered by recent storms and high waters, repairs are now underway with long term work being considered in hopes of preventing further damage during future periods of high water. "[We are] working closely with the Town to review options," said Marine Heritage Society's Eric Tolton in an email to Saugeen Shores Hub, adding that, to date, the Society has raised nearly $60,000 toward restoration efforts which carry an estimated cost of $75,000 to $100,000.

"The Front Range Light has been part of my life for decades," said Archibald in recent communication with the Hub. His family cottaged on Southampton's north shore, affording a "lovely view of both Chantry and the range light," he said.

"Those lights as well as fabulous sunsets and starry nights provided a backdrop to the memorable and musical beach bonfires of my youth," Archibald continued. "The friendships of those teen years remain treasured and strong. I've watched with concern as the range light has been battered by years and years of wind, weather and rising lake waters," he said.

When Archibald learned of plans to restore the iconic beacon he decided to turn his attention to writing a song in tribute. "I hope 'River Range Light' can help raise awareness and funds as well," he said.

From Newburgh, Ontario, east of Kingston, Archibald has worked extensively with the Blyth Festival, has written and performed for Sesame Street and Mr Dressup, and has played iconic venues such as Riverboat, Yonge and Dundas Square, and Hugh's Room.

Archibald has a deep affection for Southampton and was commissioned in 1995 by the Bruce County Museum to compose a number of original songs to celebrate the opening of their new Marine Gallery, then later a series to commemorate the opening of the museum's Military Gallery.

The Southampton Rotary Club kicked off restoration funds with a $14,500 donation from their Jazz for the Light event in November and the Southampton Yacht Club has pledged $5,000 over the next two years.
