The predicted population surge in Saugeen Shores has Mayor and Council planning to prepare the community for this future expansion. In a January 21 letter, hand delivered to the Minister of Education Stephen Lecce at the 2020 ROMA Conference, Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau made a plea to the Ministry for the construction of a new elementary school. In the letter, Charbonneau noted that the population of Saugeen Shores is expected to increase by 5,000 and acknowledged the Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project at Bruce Power to be one of the contributing factors of this growth.

“The capacity of the Town of Saugeen Shores to accommodate the families of the individuals working in Bruce Power's operations and to support its MCR project is a matter of local, regional and provincial significance,“ declared the Mayor.

Charbonneau expressed his enthusiasm toward the recent and future successes of his community, but stressed that the expansion will push the capacity of existing services and infrastructure.

“A lack of available school space could become a significant impediment to the continued growth and success of Saugeen Shores and the broader region, and to the education goals of our children,“ he concluded.
