As grocery prices continue to rise and families across Grey and Bruce counties are increasingly struggling to make ends meet, United Way of Bruce Grey (UWBG) is reminding residents of the Good Food Box Program, a volunteer-powered, community-driven initiative that provides fresh fruits and vegetables at a fraction of grocery store prices.
In the face of inflation and growing food insecurity, the box provides approximately $40 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables, 10 to 12 items in total, for $22. The boxes can be purchased monthly and must be ordered in advance.
"Every week, more families are telling us they’re making tough choices," said UWBG Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn, adding that families are having to choose between paying rent or guying groceries. "The Good Food Box is one way we can relieve that pressure, making sure people have access to good food without sacrificing other essentials," Dobbyn said.
The program purchases produce in bulk and passes on those savings to participants. "By emphasizing local and seasonal produce whenever possible, the program also supports Ontario's farming communities and promotes sustainability," said a recent release from UWBG.
Residents can place orders through participating community partners. There are no income thresholds or eligibility requirements to participate.
Individuals and businesses can also donate to sponsor a box for a family in need. Tax receipts are provided.
"Food should never be a luxury,” said Dobbyn. “We invite everyone in our region to spread the word, volunteer, or order a box. Together, we can build a healthier, more food-secure Grey Bruce."
